Maryland Mortgage Program

Financial Assistance for Homebuyers in Maryland

Any homebuyer with a home loan from the Maryland Mortgage Program (MMP) can apply for their Down Payment Assistance program to help make a down payment on the property, pay for closing costs, or satisfy prepaid/escrow expenses. This is a zero-interest, deferred loan, which means homebuyers have to pay back no more than the principal amount (which can go as high as $5,000), and not until you’ve paid off the mortgage on your home, or decide to refinance, sell, or vacate the property.

Available Assistance
Partner Match Programs provide additional down payment and/or closing cost assistance for qualified borrowers utilizing the Maryland Mortgage Program loan. Participating partners provide the established amount of assistance to borrowers who meet the criteria established by the partner. MMP matches the funds dollar-for-dollar up to a maximum of $2,500 in the form of a zero-interest, deferred loan which is repayable when the home is sold or transferred, or when the first mortgage is paid off or refinanced.

Funds from Partner Match can be combined with basic MMP down payment funds or assistance from other programs or jurisdictions. These partners can be employers, builders, and developers, or community organizations.

Contributions from these organizations usually range from $1,000 to $5,000 each and can be combined with each other and with the Down Payment Assistance loans where eligibility requirements are met. Many borrowers are able to take advantage of at least one of these programs.

Additionally, many local governments throughout Maryland offer support to purchase a home in their community.  These agencies often work with employers and community organizations to provide local partner assistance beyond state programs already described above.  This assistance can be combined with the Department's Down Payment Assistance and Partner Match Programs to help you with upfront homeownership costs.

Down payment assistance programs and/or grants were researched by the team at FHA.com. Please note that all programs listed on this website may involve a second mortgage with payments that are forgiven, deferred, or subsidized in some manner until resale of the mortgaged property.

FHA.com's compilation is not a complete list, but it can serve as a starting point in your search for the down payment assistance program or grant for your situation. It is up to the consumer to contact these entities and find out the specifics of each program.
