This state is home to the nation's most visited national park, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. On its route from Maine to Georgia, the Appalachian Trail also passes through the center of the park. Memphis is the largest city in Tennessee. Nashville, the state's capital, is a close second. Both cities play an important role in the state's rich musical history.
Tennessee is the birthplace of country music and has played a critical role in the development of rock and roll and early blues music. Memphis is also home to Sun Records where music legends like Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins began their recording careers. The rise of the Grand Ole Opry in the 1930s helped make Nashville the center of the country music recording industry.
Other important cities in Tennessee include Chattanooga, Clarksville, and Knoxville. Tennessee is known as the "Volunteer State", a nickname earned during the War of 1812 because of the prominent role played by volunteer soldiers from Tennessee.
