Established in 1732, Georgia was the last of the original Thirteen Colonies and the fourth to ratify the Constitution. It was also one of the original seven Confederate states and the last to be restored to the Union. Georgia is bordered by Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Each region of the state has its own distinctive geological characteristics. The majority of the state has a humid subtropical climate that receives much rain.
Georgia's largest cities include Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Savannah, Athens, and Macon. Georgia is the home of Ted Turner, founder of TBS, TNT, TCM, Cartoon Network, CNN, and Headline News. The Weather Channel's headquarters are located near Atlanta. 15 Fortune 500 companies and 26 Fortune 1000 companies are headquartered in Georgia, including Home Depot, Coca Cola, UPS, Delta Air Lines, AFLAC, and SunTrust Banks.
With its great population base and location along major transportation routes, Atlanta is a leading center of transportation, communications, tourism, government, and industry. Industries there include food and chemical processing, printing, publishing, automobile and aircraft manufacturing, and large corporations. Georgia also has one of the country's strongest military presences.
