Indiana ranks as the country's 38th largest state in size and is bordered by Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Illinois. It is home to pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, the state's capital and largest city. Other large cities include Fort Wayne, Evansville, and South Bend, all of which have populations over 100,000. Indiana's economy is considered to be one of the most business-friendly in the U.S. This is due in part to its conservative business climate, low business taxes, relatively low union membership, and its labor laws.
Sports are an important part of Indiana life and culture. The state has had great sports success at the college level. Indiana University has won five NCAA basketball championships, six in swimming and diving, and seven in soccer. Notre Dame has won 11 football championships. Indiana's rich basketball heritage reaches back to the formative years of the sport when high school basketball was born in the state. The 1986 film Hoosiers is inspired by the story of the 1954 state champion Milan High School. The Peyton Manning era and the success of the Indianapolis Colts is one that will be remembered with pride for decades to come.
